Why "MAPCAR"?

MAPCAR is the old name of a Lisp function which applies another function to each element of a list, an important technique in functional programming. CAR originally stood for "Contents of the Address part of Register number" on the IBM 704 computer where Lisp was implemented in the late 1950s.

In modern languages the function is normally just called map, and CAR is usually referred to as either first or head.
